BENGALURU, Karnataka: The Government of Karnataka informed the State Legislative Council that a penalty of Rs 4.33 crores has been collected from the violators of the single-use plastic ban since July 2022.
In line with the directives of the Government of India, the state government has banned the use, purchase and storage of single-use plastic in Karnataka. The state has imposed a penalty of Rs 5,000 per tonne on manufacturers, Rs 500 on waste generators, Rs 2,000 on retail sellers and Rs 200 on street vendors in case of first time violation. However, in the second and third instances, the penalty amount will be doubled.
The government has also informed the council that the state generates over 830 tonnes of plastic waste everyday. The city of Bengaluru is the largest contributor with over 317 tonnes, followed by Mysuru with 144 tonnes, Chitradurga with 60 tonnes, Koppal with 36 tonnes and Shivamogga with 31 tonnes.
