NEW DELHI: Tata Power has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Tamil Nadu, to invest around Rs 3000 crore to construct a solar cell and module manufacturing facility in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. The MoU sets forth the agreement reached by the two parties to encourage the transition to clean energy and jobs in the state. According to a statement from Tata Power, the investment in the factory will be made over the course of 16 months and will directly and indirectly result in the creation of over 2000 jobs, a majority of which will be held by women. Tata Power signed the MoU in the presence of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M K Stalin, and other top officials, S Krishnan, Additional Chief Secretary to Industries Department, Government of Tamil Nadu and Praveer Sinha, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Tata Power.

The new facility in Tamil Nadu will combine future n-type Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contacts (TOPCON) technology with Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell (Mono-PERC) Bifacial Technology, to create High Wattage Modules with industry-leading efficiencies. The plant will use autonomous mobile robots (AMR), which carry parts using lasers and cameras, for efficient equipment navigation. The introduction of Industry 4.0 standards—a fully networked factory with smart production tools and technologies—will be another highlight of the plant’s technological growth.
