ROURKELA: Rourkela Municipal Corporation (RMC) has intensified efforts to bring homeless people to its three night Shelters for Urban Homeless (SUH) due to dropping temperature to seven-degree celsius in the city.
The three shelters are located at Plant Site, Power House Road and the new bus terminal. Each shelter homes can accommodate 100 people.
Yeddula Vijay, Commissioner, RMC said that the municipal body will ensure that no homeless person spends a night in the open. Vijay added that two devoted teams have been positioned at the railway station and the new bus stand and another team will pay visits to vulnerable places to rescue homeless people.
According to an official, on an average scale, around 10 homeless persons are being rescued and accommodated at the shelters daily. Except for the shelter at the new bus terminal, the other two are not popular and continue to struggle with 40 per cent to 60 per cent occupancy, added the official.
As per RMC, awareness is underway and the occupancy of the rest two shelters would improve gradually.
