CHENNAI, Tamil Nadu: The consultation process to begin in 28 Assembly Constituencies of The Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA), involving the officials and the residents, for the preparation of Chennai’s Third Master Plan 2027-2046.

The expansion and development of the Chennai Metropolitan Planning Area (CMPA) will be based on the regional planning approach, and it will be integrated with the Third Master Plan of Chennai.

S. Muthusamy, Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Government of Tamil Nadu, on Monday, September 19, initiated the process of engagement with the stakeholders to prepare the vision document of master plan. On the same day, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) launched a workshop to solicit suggestions from the stakeholders, including residents, who could provide their views and suggestions through the website of CMA.

The minister said that the CMDA will reach out to all the villages in the metropolitan area seeking cooperation from residents in the consultation process. He added, “Public consultation is very important. Residents will be able to give innovative ideas about urban planning.”

He said that the widening of roads is essential as it will eliminate the need to widen the roads in future. He noted, “We are also planning to implement land pooling for development of villages along 62 km of Outer Ring Road.” Minister also said that he has asked the official to include projects of the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNSB) in the redevelopment process.

Hitesh Kumar Makwana, Secretary, Housing and Urban Development, said that the work to prepare the vision document of the Third Master Plan will begin this year. He said, “Amendment of rules will be done to add items that were not in the rules, such as GIS and coastal zone management. We will notify the rules in April, and the plan will be notified between December 2025 and April 2026.”  The CMDA is looking to focus on transit-orient development, land pooling and redevelopment, climate resilient planning, tourism and waterfront development and heritage conservation, said Anshul Mishra, Member Secretary, CMDA.
