PUNE: Pune Smart City Development Corporation Limited (PSCDCL) together with Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has introduced ‘Zero Waste Project’ for smart city area in the city. As per a statement issued by PSCDCL said that the purpose of this project is to cover Aundh, Baner, Balewadi, Bopodi and Pashan areas so that 100 per cent in-situ composting can be promoted.

A workshop,with an intention to bring various stakeholders on a single to understand effective coordination, challenges and get possible solutions for garbage disposal in smart cities, was organised recently.

The workshop started by observing project observations and conclusions of survey results. Participants approved the relevant data sets and gave their valuable input to strengthen the data. They presented their challenges and possible solutions to make garbage compostingsuccessful. A draft of 3-month work plan was also discussed.

According to the PMC officials, there is approximately 1,600 tonnes of garbage generated in the city every day. Its disposal is a big problem within the city limits and thereforethe waste is sent to Uruli-phursungi for disposal. The corporation had also initiatedthe zero wasteand container free city projects in other parts of the city. But,till nowthe projectshave not proved to be very successful, according to the PMC officials.
