Prediction of Indian Nino now possible well in advance

HYDERABAD: Due to climate change, predicting rainfall has become a tougher job leading to a lack of planning for the same.

Researchers from the University of Hyderabad have discovered two models that can help scientists predict the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) or the Indian Nino. By predicting the Indian Nino, scientists would be able to better predict the arrival of the monsoon.

The Indian Nino is a climate driver that impact rainfall patterns in the areas close to the Indian Ocean. Over the past few years, India has been witnessing an increase in rainfall events that are becoming more and more predictable.

The Indian Nino can be predicted atleast six months prior to its occurrence. The growth of decadal prediction would help in forecasting the climate behaviour for the next 5-20 years. The recent development will help stakeholders and policymakers to strategise it in advance so that they can take decisions accordingly.
