NEW DELHI: Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, said on Thursday, November 11, that public-private partnership (PPP) model is important for financing low-cost technologies, new business models, and innovative monitoring mechanisms for solid and liquid waste management.

Puri also said that with the launch of the second phase of Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), the central government is trying to build an Open Defecation Free (ODF), garbage-free, and water secure India. Puri, while speaking at the fifth ISC-FICCI Sanitation Awards and India Sanitation Conclave 2021, said that the central government has constructed more than 62 lakh toilets for urban households, which drove a holistic behavioural change in citizens.

Puri also added in his statement that SBM 2.0 will stimulate city governments to better plan measures for sludge management, waste water treatment, source segregation, reduction in single-use plastic use, and bio-remediation of dumpsites.
