NEW DELHI: Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi inaugurated Pune Metro Rail Project on Sunday, March 6. He also inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of various development projects in Pune. He promised that the metro will ease the mobility of people in Pune and give relief from pollution and jams, increasing the ease of living for everyone.
On the occasion, PM Modi said that presently, more than 24 cities in the country are benefitted from the metro services or are on the verge of getting it. He added that the growing urban population is an opportunity and a challenge as well. “Development of mass transit system is important to face the growing population. There should be an Integrated Command & Control Center in every city to make the facility smart. Every city should have a modern waste management system to strengthen the circular economy. There should be enough modern sewage treatment plants to make every city water plus, better arrangements should be made for the conservation of water sources,” he added.
Pune Metro Rail Project was sanctioned by the Government of India in 2016, and the work began on May 3, 2017. It comprises of two corridors – North-South corridor and East-West corridor. The total length is 33.2 km with 30 stations, including 27.2 km of elevated section and 6 km of underground section.
The project will help in multi-modal integration, economic benefits, orderly urbanisation, reduction of road accidents and fatalities, reduction in pollution, etc.
