NEW DELHI: Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi announced that now some residents of Delhi’s Jhuggi-Jhopdi clusters will now have their own homes, underscoring the Government of India’s welfare initiatives for the underprivileged.
On Wednesday, PM Modi officially opened 3,024 newly built EWS flats in Kalkaji, Delhi, which were constructed for rehabilitating slum inhabitants as part of the ‘In-Situ Slum Rehabilitation’ Project.
At Delhi’s Vigyan Bhawan, PM Modi also gave out keys to Bhoomiheen Camp residents who were eligible. He added that the programme was initiated to give pucca homes to Delhi’s disadvantaged families. He claimed that more than 3,000 houses have been constructed in the first phase of the Kalkaji Extension alone. The remaining families there will receive their new homes very shortly.
According to the PM, marginalised groups are given a huge push to fight poverty on their own when security is guaranteed in their life. More than ever, they feel in charge. “Other families residing here will also get a chance to housewarming very soon. I have faith that these efforts by the central government will play a key role in making Delhi an ideal city. Our government is paying equal attention, especially to the urban poor,” PM said. He claimed that Delhi’s transformation into a lovely metropolis filled with cutting-edge amenities is the central government’s ambition. The Prime Minister stated that the central government ensured financial inclusion for everyone who lacked access to bank accounts in order to bring development to the grassroots. He claimed that all members of the unbanked and uninsured segment of society were included in the Centre.
According to PM Modi, the irregularities with the ration card used to make it impossible for the poor to obtain rations. “We are ensuring ‘Ease of Living’ for the poor in Delhi through ‘One Nation, One Ration Card’. In the time of this global crisis, the central government has been giving free ration to lakhs of poor people in Delhi for the last two years,” he said. Three of such projects have been started by the Delhi Development Authority in the neighbourhoods of Kathputli Colony, Jailorwala Bagh, and Kalkaji Extension. Three slum clusters—Bhoomiheen Camp, Navjeevan Camp, and Jawahar Camp—located in Kalkaji are being in-situ rehabilitated throughout the course of the Kalkaji Extension Project.
At the nearby vacant commercial centre site, 3024 EWS apartments have been built as part of Phase I. Bhoomiheen Camp’s eligible households will be relocated to the newly built EWS flats in order to free up the Jhuggi Jhopri site there.
After Bhoomiheen Campsite is vacated, in Phase II, this vacant site will be used for Navjeevan Camp and Jawahar Camp rehabilitation. 3024 apartments have been finished in Phase I of the project and are ready for occupancy. These apartments were built at ₹345 crores and come with all public utilities, including vitrified floor tiles, ceramic tiles, an Udaipur green marble counter in the kitchen, etc. Additionally, public amenities have been offered. According to PMO, the distribution of apartments will give residents ownership titles and a sense of security.
