NEW DELHI: Piyush Goyal, Minister of Railways and of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, on Tuesday, September 9, said that the climate change threat is real and dangerous. Goyal, at the Sustainability Summit on Circular Economy for Self-Reliant India organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry via video conferencing, said that it is necessary for the country to move towards a world with net zero carbon emissions.

Introduction of mechanized cleaning in railways has reduced the water consumption by 90 per cent and because it is mechanized, 6 per cent water can be recycled out of the 10 per cent that is utilized. This effectively reduces the water consumption to barely 3-4 per cent, Goyal said.

According to the minister, India can learn to make more efficient and optimal use of scarce resources that can redefine our growth or existence model, by laying serious stress on sustainability. Goyal said that it is time that the industrial and economic ecosystems of the country are adjusted accordingly to focus on sustainability. He further added that a culture of zero waste and consciousness for protecting the environment can be developed by using simple day to day examples.
