THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Kerala: The Government of Kerala has decided to launch a year-long campaign to make the coastal state waste-free. A high-level committee under the chairmanship of M B Rajesh, Minister for Local Self-Government Department, has formulated an elaborate plan with the help of which Kerala will become a waste-free state by the end of March 31, 2024.
Veena George, Minister for Health, Government of Kerala; V P Joy, Chief Secretary, Kerala; V Venu, Sarada Muralidharan, Additional Chief Secretaries; and T N Seema, Navakeralam Coordinator attended the meeting where it was decided that the first phase of activities under the campaign should be completed before June 5.
Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan and leader of opposition V D Satheeshan will hold online meetings with local body representatives in the state to make them aware of the importance of protecting the environment along with scientific waste management. Apart from that, all the non-biodegradable waste generated in the government offices will be handed over to Haritha Karma Sena. The offices using the services of Haritha Karma Sena will be paying user charges to them.
Additionally, each government office will have a protocol officer and waste management facilities will also be built in the offices to make sure that generated organic waste is handled scientifically.
