People can’t select between the two vaccines: Health Secretary

NEW DELHI: Rajesh Bhushan, Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India, said that people will not be able to choose between the two vaccines, Covishield and Covaxin, after the beginning of rollout on January 16. He added that the Central government has purchased 110 lakh Covishield doses from Serum Institute of India (SII) at the cost of Rs 200 per dose. 55 lakh Covaxin doses have also been procured from Bharat Biotech (BBIL) at a cost of Rs 295 per dose. As a special gesture, BBIL will give 16.5 lakh doses free of cost to central government from its total batch.

The Central government has received 54,72,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine to distribute and 100 per cent doses will be available till January 14. Moreover, four other COVID-19 vaccines are under trail in the country. Bhushan said that it is expected that all the logistics will be ready from January 16 in all the states and union territories. He added that there should be continuous oversight and supervision during the entire vaccine rollout.

The vaccine will first reach four major depots in Karnal, Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai and all the states will have at least one state-level regional vaccine store.
