PUNE, Maharashtra: The Panvel City Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is all set to seize and auction the properties of tax defaulters who haven’t paid their tax dues, even though they have been offered multiple tax discounts and amnesty schemes.
As per Ganesh Deshmukh, Municipal Commissioner, the civic body will seize properties of tax defaulters. The properties will be auctioned at a later stage to recover tax dues.
Civic body surveyed nearly 3.5 lakh properties in its jurisdiction for property tax assessment. The corporation has till now has collected ₹248 crore as property tax in the current financial year.
Section 128 and Schedule D rule 47 of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act empowers the urban local body to seize and confiscate movable and immovable properties and sell them to recover its pending tax dues. The act also allows people to appeal against their tax assessment done by the civic body.
To encourage timely tax payments, the civic body offered penalty relief ranging from 25 per cent to 100 per cent.
