BHUBANESHWAR, Odisha: The Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik, on Saturday, October 29, announced that the state government is planning to introduce disaster management in the educational curricula of students starting from class 4 to the graduation level.

With this move, the state government aims to enhance household level disaster response as there would be a ‘Disaster Management Yodha’ in each household in Odisha. The Chief Minister also said that the Government of Odisha has been training nearly 40,000 volunteers at the village and shelter level.

Patnaik added that to enhance the community level disaster preparedness, the state government is taking several initiatives such as the capacity building of elected representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions, Urban Local Bodies, Mission Shakti Members, Anganwadi Workers, ASHA workers and members of Vana Surakhya Samiti (VSS).

Patnaik was addressing a meeting on the occasion of Odisha Disaster Preparedness Day and National Day for Disaster Reduction, which is observed in remembrance of the super cyclone that hit the state in 1999 and claimed the lives of around 10,000 people in Odisha.
