Odisha government approves Rs 2,600 crore for drinking water projects

BIRUR: Krishna Byre Gowda, Minister for Rural Development & Panchayat Raj during the visit of the Cabinet sub-committee studying drought in Kadur taluk, that state government has designated Rs 2,600 crore on February 1 for drinking water projects due to the drought in the state. 

The Minister added that the state government had released Rs 1,500 crore to zila panchayats to tackle the water crisis and Rs 134 crore for the task force chaired by MLAs. The state has also announced Rs 178 crore special package for coconut growers without the aid of central government. The amount would be directly transferred to the farmers’ account, said Gowda. K J George, District in-charge Minister, Jayamala, Women and Child Welfare Minister and S L Dharme Gowda Council Deputy Chairman were also present at the moment.

The works under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) were in progress and the Centre had stopped releasing funds since December for MGNREGS, he stated.
