Odisha: 75.68 % govt schools lack proper infrastructure

BHUBANESWAR, Odisha: As many as 5,421 elementary schools in the state do not have a playground, depriving kids for any physical activity. Furthermore, the Right to Education (RTE) Act's requirements and norms are undermined by the 75.68 per cent (5,408) of schools that need moderate or major repairs. A study titled "State of School Infrastructure in Government Elementary Schools in Odisha," which was carried out by Atmashakti Trust in cooperation with Odisha Shramajeebee Mancha (OSM) and Mahila Shramajeebee Mancha, Odisha (MSMO) stated that 8.7 per cent of the assessed schools lack a supply of drinking water, depriving kids of a basic necessity while also disturbingly showing a staggering non-compliance with the standards stated in the RTE Act. Around 6,523 schools with a supply of drinking water suffer from serious structural damage and are therefore unusable.
