NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on September 17 refrain an order given by the National Green Tribunal implementing the odd-even scheme applicable to all, including scooters and motorbike.
A Bench led by Justice Madan B. Lokur gave an exception to the women driving four-wheelers. The Bench’s decision to exempt women came after the Delhi government addressed the issue of their safety.
Additional Solicitor General A.N.S. Nadkarni, representative of the Delhi government had challenged the tribunal’s order which said “there shall be no exemption to any persons, officer, and individual and the two-wheelers from the ambit and scope of the odd-even scheme. They will be applied with equal rigor to all cases and all vehicles.”
The Bench staying on its decision stated that in the submission by Additional Solicitor General, the women and two-wheelers can be granted an exception. We will look forward to the request of Additional Solicitor General and will stay on the operation in respect of women and two-wheelers for the time being.
The Delhi government during the hearing mentioned that it will be difficult for the public transport to accommodate an extra load.
