BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister of Karnataka Basavaraj Bommai has notified the state Legislative Assembly that heavy vehicles will not be allowed to ply on the Goraguntepalya flyover in Bengaluru, which has been closed since December 26.

“Due to poor quality of construction on the flyover, it is risky for heavy vehicles to use it,” according to CM Bommai, who added that he will petition the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to enable light cars to use it.

During an examination on December 25, the NHAI detected two deteriorated cables at the 8th mile, prompting the closure of the flyover. Tumakuru Road has seen an upsurge in traffic as a result of the closure.

R Manjunath, Dasarahalli Janata Dal (secular), raised the issue at zero-hour saying that the NHAI has stayed mute while collecting tolls without allowing anyone to use the flyover. According to him, traffic on National Highway 4 has gone uncontrolled, and even the movement of ambulances has been hampered. Vishweshwar Hegde Kager, Speaker of the Assembly, also expressed his concern about the traffic situation.

The shutdown of the flyover was caused by faulty work and lack of maintenance, according to CM Bommai. “Even after the repairs were completed, specialists from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) issued a report stating that it was unsafe for automobiles to travel. “Even after the repairs, the cables from the support system are buckling,” he stated.

“As this is a crucial link connecting North India, North Karnataka, and South Karnataka,” CM Bommai noted, “I have submitted a letter to Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Transport, Government of India, on the problem.”
