NEW DELHI: The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) approved nine projects worth ₹265 crore during its 56th executive committee meeting held in New Delhi on Friday, August 30. The approved projects are crucial for minimising pollution, maintaining cleanliness, and preserving the river Ganga.
The approved projects include key projects in the faecal sludge management sector, under which a treatment plant with 8 KLD capacity will be built along with a solar power plant with 15 KW capacity.
The sewerage project approved for Gulaothi town, Bulandshahr district, aims to curb the pollution of the east Kali River. The river is a tributary of the river Ganga. This project with 10 million tonnes of sewage treatment capacity will estimatedly cost ₹50.98 crore.
The restoration plan of lower-order streams and tributaries in the upper Gomti River basin was also approved in the meeting. As part of the project, nature-based solutions will be implemented to revitalise the lower-order streams and tributaries in the upper Gomti River basin. This in turn will improve the condition of the Ganga. This will cost ₹81.09 lakh.
Executive committee has also approved a project regarding the installation of new penstock gates and renovation of the existing gates on the eastern and western banks of the Beliaghata Circular Canal. This will cost ₹7.11 crore, to be borne by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
Additionally, the integrated plan for the conservation and management of the Udhwa Lake Bird Sanctuary in Sahibganj, Jharkhand, for five years will cost ₹25.89 crores. Renovation of the electric crematoriums in Santipur, Garulia, and Chakdha municipalities in West Bengal at the estimated cost of ₹2.89 crores has also been approved.
Munger sewerage network with a 30 MLD capacity and a 175 km long sewerage network has been approved with the revised project cost of ₹522.85 crores.
Additionally, the committee approved the secretariat for Smart Laboratory on Clean River (SLCR) at Varanasi by IIT (BHU).
