NEW DELHI: Researchers from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Andhra Pradesh have developed food packaging material from nanoparticles. They demonstrated that the concept of nano-technology can be used to develop packaging material that can enhance the shelf-life, maintain quality, retain flavour and colour of food.

The research was conducted by a team led by Dr Tingirikari Jagan Mohan Rao, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology, NIT Andhra Pradesh. The published research was co-authored by Akriti Tirkey, Mizoram University with Dr Punuri Jayasekhar babu, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology, Mizoram University.

Nanotechnology is developing regularly as its application is growing in several sectors including food and agriculture. Nanomaterials can be used in the form of sensors to maintain temperature, detect pathogens, pesticides, toxins, and other chemicals in packed food.
