NIDM organises programme on ‘Psychological care in Disaster Management’

SHILLONG, Meghalaya: The National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) has joined hands with the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) of Meghalaya to organise a 3-day training programme on ‘Psychological Care in Disaster Management’. The training programme will run from August 16 to August 18, at the conference hall of Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute (MATI) in Shillong.

The programme stresses understanding the needs of the survivors of disasters and also understanding the role of a psychological caregiver in helping the survivors deal with their disaster induced trauma. The programme will also generate awareness regarding how people react to tense situations and to learn the techniques to provide psychological care to children and women.

As the chief guest, R. Lyngdoh, IAS, Secretary, Department of Revenue and Disaster Management, Government of Meghalaya attended the inaugural event. While addressing the event and praising the workers’ efforts during a disaster which often gets unnoticed, he also highlighted the importance of psychological care during any disaster.

Dr Ajinder Walia, Associate Professor, NIDM, delivered his address informing the audience how the programme will help the participants acquire all the necessary skills regarding psychological care for individuals and the community following a disaster.
