NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Government of Delhi, municipal commissioner, and city police regarding the deaths of three civil service aspirants due to flooding in the basement of a coaching centre in the Old Rajendra Nagar area.
The human rights institution has asked for a detailed report regarding the incident. Similarly, the Delhi Chief Secretary has also been directed to survey the number of functional coaching centres violating the norms in the city. The report should include details such as pending complaints and action taken on these complaints by the concerned departments.
The authorities have swung into action after three civil service aspirants lost their lives due to a flooding incident in the basement of the coaching institution in Delhi.
The Master Plan of Delhi 2021 classifies the usage of the basement for three different purposes. Rau’s IAS Study Circle was only allowed to use the basement as storage, parking, and utility areas for the entire building and not as a library. This was mentioned in the certification issued by the corporation in 2021. After the incident, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) sealed 13 coaching institutions in Old Rajendra Nagar and Karol Bagh for violating the norms. Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi also directed the MCD commissioner to take strict action against any such coaching institution in Delhi.
