BENGALURU: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) slaps a penalty of Rs 50 crore on Karnataka government on December 11 for not taking any initiatives for the two lakes-Bellandurand Varthur in Bengaluru, said Namma Bengaluru Foundation (NBF), an NGO, in a statement, citing the Tribunal order.
Sajan Poovayya, senior counsel of the foundation said that the lakes are extremely polluted with sewage, solid municipal waste, construction and demolition waste. The tribunal has noted that the authorities have failedto perform their duties and the neglect has brought immense harm to the society. “The state of Karnataka will also undertake to pay Rs 100 crore if there is afailure to implement the plan,” added Poovayya
According to the statement, The Tribunal has directed the Greater Bangalore City Corporation to pay Rs 25 crore to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Rs 10 crore to the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KPSCB) for the logistics of Justice Santosh Hegde Committee which was formed to look after the implementation of its orders.
