NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) rapped the governments of Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal and imposed a fine of Rs 25 lakh on each of them for inaction on continue damage to river Ganga.
It is to be noted that in Bihar there is no progress as not a single sewage infrastructure project has been completed. Whereas, in West Bengal only three projects out of 22 have been completed. The progress in Jharkhand is not up to the mark.
The NGT said, “We direct the states of Bihar, West Bengal and Jharkhand to pay Rs 25 lakh each as the compensation for the damage to the holy river Ganga and inaction of the states even in responding to this tribunal with Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) on a month which may be spent on restoration of environment…(sic)”.
