NGT directs NMCG to deploy taskforce for waste management at Kumbh

NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has asked the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) to deploy the Ganga task force for waste management and maintenance of water quality during the upcoming Kumbh Mela.

A Bench headed by Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, NGT Chairperson asked the authorities to use proper disposal methodology for thermocol cups and other such items instead of burning them.

Reminding the previous orders, the NGT said, “We direct that earlier direction of digitally displaying water quality at permanent places may be fully complied with during the Kumbh Mela.”

NGT’s directions came post the submission of a report that highlighted measures for waste management to be undertaken during the event. The report was submitted by a committee constituted by the NGT earlier. The tribunal noted the ‘Kumbh Sanitation Plan’ provided by the Health Department and Mela Authority to the committee.

The bench said, “The Kumbh Sanitation Plan provides for three coloured bins for storage of bio-degradable waste, recyclable waste and other wastes. It was noted that there is a requirement of centres for collection and segregation of waste and also for public association and awareness and community mobilisation…the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing and other authorities should display posters and banners to educate the people with regard to waste management.”
