LUDHIANA, Punjab: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) stated that the Municipal Corporation of Ludhiana must focus on preventing fires in the landfill areas and remediation of legacy waste. NGT said that the Chief Secretary of Punjab would be held accountable if this situation persists.
The NGT has directed the city’s civic body to scientifically manage the current 3 million tonnes of the legacy waste following Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. NGT also added to restrict the entry of visitors and workers to prevent landfill fires.
A report by the Municipal Corporation of Ludhiana, on September 21, 2022, stated that bio-remediation work for 5 lakh tonnes of waste has been taken up, and the remaining 1.96 million tonnes is yet to be taken care of.
