NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) to take action against 400 godowns in Shahdara where garbage is being burnt allegedly.
A bench which was headed by Adarsh Kumar Goel, Chairperson of NGT directed authorities to submit a compliance affidavit by April 24, 2019.
“Since the matter actually affects the environment in violation of rules and orders to this tribunal, let the commissioner of EDMC and member secretary of DPCC to take needed steps,” the bench directed the senior officials.
The direction came when the bench was hearing an appeal about alleged air and noise pollution due to garbage burning in godowns. The appeal also claimed that the godowns are operating without any permission.
“There is a breakage of steel and iron garbage which release dangerous oxides. The godowns are not having any permission to operate. As per the applicant, 400 garbage godowns are functioning and the garbage is being burnt there which creates noise pollution at high decibel and air pollution as well. The garbage godowns are functioning in Shahdara without any permission which is causing health issues to inhabitants,” the bench noted while hearing to the plea.
