NEW DELHI: To look into the erosion of the Yamuna floodplain, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) formed a committee on April 8, 2019. It was alleged that erosion of the Yamuna floodplain is caused due to heavy vehicular movement in Sonipat district of Haryana.

A bench headed by Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, NGT Chairperson constituted a committee comprising the principal secretary of the Haryana Irrigation and Water Resources Department, member secretary of the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) and the director of the Mines and Geology Department.

As per the NGT, “The nodal agency for coordination and compliance will be the principal secretary of the Haryana Irrigation and Water Resources Department. The joint report may be furnished within one month by e-mail to take up the case before the monsoon.”

The bench was hearing a petition filed by Krishna Chandar, resident of Haryana, who had alleged that the policy of allowing heavy vehicles in Yamuna river embankments was destroying the ecology in Sonipat district.
