NGT constitutes a committee to monitor hazardous units in Sarita Vihar

NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) constituted a joint committee tolook into a plea alleging operation of hazardous industries in Delhi’s Sarita Vihar.

The NGT directions came post a plea moved by the Aali Vihar Vikas Manch, which alleged that in Bhim Colony, AaliVihar and SaritaVihar hazardous dyeing units are operating.

A bench headed by Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, NGT Chairperson, constituted a joint committee comprising representatives from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and Sub-Divisional Magistrate of South-East district.

The bench observed, “At least 50 factories are causing air, water and noise pollution in the area and also choking the water-flow systems. When the drains get choked, the water spills out on to the roads. Hazardous chemicals are affecting the water quality.”

The plea further stated that a lot of harmful smoke is generated due to burning of fossil fuel to run the machines. Groundwater is drawn to wash and chemically colour jeans and the polluted water is then discharged in the open.

The green panel made CPCB the nodal agency. The Bench said that the joint committee has to furnish a report to the NGT about the factual aspects and the action taken. The committee has been directed to submit a report within a month.
