NEW DELHI: A government scientific agency said on Tuesday, July 6, that New Zealand has recorded the hottest June on record as temperature of the region continued to rise consistent with global warming. Daily temperatures are an average of 10.6 degree Celsius. Chris Brandolino, Scientist, National Institute of Water and Scientific Research (NIWA), said that it is substantial and there have been just 13 instances since 1909 where we had such an anomaly. He added that what is alarming is that over the past 10 years, this has happened six times.

Brandolino said that the short-term factors such as warmer ocean temperatures have helped to heat the air over New Zealand and climate change was a constant underlying factor. The country had its second hottest year in 2020, which was the seventh year in the decade when temperatures have been in the top 10 highest ever recorded.

New Zealand has committed to become carbon neutral by 2050 and to generate all the energy of the country through renewable sources by 2035.
