NEW YORK: Andrew Cuomo, 56th Governor of New York, signed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), a law to fight against climate change and establish its status as a national leader helping enhance the state’s clan energy furture.

The new law pledges to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent below 1990 levels by 2030, and 85 per cent below 1990 levels by 2050. The law also requires the power sector in the country to eliminate carbon pollution by 2040. Recognising that significant near-term reductions of pollutants in the power sector and accelerated placement of clean energy technologies are critical to achieve economy wide emission reductions at a level consistent with science.

Mary Barber, Director, Regulatory and Legislative Affairs said, “This is a bold move. New York is cutting climate pollution, making the air cleaner, and protecting vulnerable communities.”

Barber further added that by developing a clear timeline for implementing these short and long-term targets, New York is taking a significant step towards a 100 per cent clean economy by 2050.
