MADURAI: The Government of Tamil Nadu has announced the foundation of a new Madurai Urban Development Authority. V Irai Anbu, Chief Secretary, issued the government order. According to the order, sustainable development is becoming increasingly important as the urban population grows. As a result, a separate authority would allow urban planners to concentrate on the city’s growth.
The District Collector of Madurai will serve as Vice-Chairman, Urban Development Authority, which will be chaired by the Principal Secretary, Housing and Urban Development. Ex-officio members would be the heads of the departments of finance, transportation, industries, public works, municipal administration and water supply, and rural development, among others.
The authority’s goal and function would be to create and enforce development plans for the area under its authority. In addition, any other plan for the development of the Madurai urban area will be considered. With experienced town planners and engineers on board, the ex-officio members would advise the Madurai Urban Development Authority in the design and implementation of development plans. The state government directive stated that the Director, Town and Country Planning, would execute the New Urban Development Authority, Madurai, in the same manner as the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority.
