NDMC to hike penalty for mosquito breeding

NEW DELHI: The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is planning to hike the penalty on mosquito breeding with an aim to ensure compliance from the people regarding the prevention of mosquito breeding norms in Delhi. After this modification, the penalty amount will be increased to Rs 5,000 from Rs 500. In case of consecutive offence, the penalty will be increased to Rs 200 per visit as opposed to the earlier one of Rs 20.

The civic body said that in its last three orders in 2021 and 2022, the Delhi High Court has directed the state government and local bodies to amend the relevant provisions of the mosquito-borne disease bylaws to increase the penalty amount. In line with the order of the High Court, the council on Wednesday, September 28, approved a proposal to amend Section 390 of the New Delhi Municipal Council Act, 1994 to bring in “a more effective deterrent”.

The officials added that the proposal will be sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, for approval, after which the changes will come into effect.

Gyanesh Bharti, Commissioner, New Delhi Municipal Corporation, has asked various departments such as the Central Public Works Department (CPWD), Public Works Department (PWD), Delhi Development Authority (DDA), universities and Delhi Police to take relevant measures to prevent mosquito breeding in their area. MCD has also started a helpline in 12 zones.
