NEW DELHI: North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), has terminated the contract of operators who manage their waterless urinals. Recently, in the case of Swachhta Survekshan rankings, NDMC had performed way below expectations and was rated worst in the capital. NDMC also saw a drop in its rank from 206 in 2018 to 282 this year.
The civic body runs 318 such waterless urinal units and also runs community toilets and public urinals. Waterless urinals were given to private contractors who were expected to manage these units in return for the revenue generated by advertising them. An official said that the performance of these contractors was not satisfactory.
Since the beginning of ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’, the issue of ineffectiveness of urinals run by the corporation is plaguing the civic body. Although a large number of new units have been opened, but operations and management resources have not been added. The official also complained about the shortage of jetting machines used to clean them.
The corporation currently has 1,163 urinals, 499 community toilet complexes, 41 toilets for women and 318 waterless urinals in six zones —City, Karol Bagh, Chandni Chowk, Civil Lines, Rohini and Narela. The project of setting up waterless urinals was initiated ahead of the Commonwealth Games but did not work out due to maintenance issues.
