NEW DELHI: National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has begun testing the emergency cell broadcast technology to provide timely alerts to the people and enhance public safety in case of a disaster. C-DOT has developed the cell broadcast technology.

To test the effectiveness of the technology, a text message stating ‘Emergency alert: Severe’ was sent on Thursday to Jio and BSNL subscribers. The broadcast message was available in both Hindi and English language. Rajkumar Upadhyay, Chief Executive Officer, C-DOT, spoke with the PTI, where he mentioned that the technology is available with foreign vendors, so the organisation is developing it in house. He said, “The cell broadcast technology is under development. It will be implemented by NDMA for sending out alerts at the time of disaster directly on the mobile phone screens. It is currently being tested on Jio and BSNL networks.”
