MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation would soon be presented with a proposal for amending the Development Control and Promotional Regulation (DCPR) 2034 and redeveloping the municipal markets. The news comes in after several years of delay and protests by the stakeholders of the marketplace. The aforementioned proposal allows the redevelopment by appointing developers from licensees of markets.

The amendment proposal in DCPR section 33 (21) will be presented to the Improvement Committee for approval and will then be sent to the civic body for the final vote before it comes into effect. An official statement released by the BMC requested the state’s Urban Development Department for amendments in 33(21) of DCPR 2034. The decision for redevelopment is imperative for current times as many of such marketplaces are in a dilapidated condition.

The amendment also includes a provision that limits the extra area vendors can use in the municipal markets to increase customer mobility. According to the proposal, vendors are taking 20% extra area than what was allowed in the original market plan.

The amendment read that every licensed vendor operating in the municipal market would be rehabilitated with the minimum existing carpet area certified by the market department.
