NEW DELHI: The findings of a study by Cardiff University, United Kingdom, found that mouthwash can kill novel coronavirus in saliva within 30 seconds. The study can make mouthwash an important part of people’s daily routine.

The researchers said that mouthwashes containing at least 0.07 per cent Cetyl Pyridinium Chloride (CPC) showed ‘promising signs’ of killing the novel coronavirus in lab. They added that it should not be used to cure COVID-19 as it will not reach the respiratory tract or the lungs.

Dr Richard Stanton, Lead Author, said that this study adds to the emerging believe that several mouthwashes commonly used to fight gum diseases can also inactivate the SARS-CoV-2. A clinical trial will soon be conducted to determine whether mouthwash can help in reducing the presence of novel coronavirus in saliva of COVID-19 patients.
