NEW DELHI: The Make in India and AtmaNirbhar initiatives got a massive boost from schemes and missions launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India.
Against the total approved State Annual Action Plan worth ₹77,640 crore, 5,874 projects costing ₹82,223 crore have been grounded. Out of these grounded projects, physical work, costing ₹67,073 crore has already been completed, including completed projects worth ₹33,031 crore and expenditure of ₹60,063 crore has been incurred.
Under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), the ministry has provided 134 lakh tap water connections and 102 lakh sewerage connections. Apart from that, the flagship scheme has also facilitated the development of 3,096 Minimal Liquid Discharge (MLD) capacity water treatment plants (WTPs), 2,892 MLD treatment capacity Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), construction of green space on around 4,450 acres of land and removal of 2,400 water logging points.
Similarly, AMRUT 2.0, launched by the Prime Minister of India on October 1, 2021, aims to make the country ‘water secure’ by providing functional tap water connections to all households in statutory towns and cities. As per the estimates, AMRUT 2.0 will cost around ₹2,77,000 crore, including the central share of ₹76,760 crore to be spent during 2021-22 to 2025-26.
In addition to AMRUT 2.0, a total of 4,830 projects related to water supply, water body rejuvenation, sewerage and septage management, and development of park and other green spaces, which will cost ₹89,381 crore has also been sanctioned. The new version of the AMRUT mission schemes aims to provide 2.68 crore tap water connections, 2.64 crore sewer connections, enhancing WTPs capacity by 7,151 MLD and STPs capacity to enhance by 2,204 MLD by constructing new plants and improving capacity of existing treatment facilities.
In addition to AMRUT, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana- Urban (PMAY-U) launched in 2015, aims to provide residential facilities to all eligible beneficiaries across all the urban areas in the country. All the houses, being allotted under the scheme have all basic civic amenities, including water supply, electricity and toilet. PMAY-U has been extended upto December 31, 2024. Out of a total of 1.20 crore houses sanctioned before November 2022, 64 lakhs have been completed, and the rest are under various stages of construction.
