KOLKATA, West Bengal: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has sanctioned ₹860 crore for improving urban sanitation in West Bengal under the Swachh Bharat 2.0 (SBM 2.0). The sanctioned amount will pave the way for creating the urban sanitation infrastructure, thus aiding the improvement of overall cleanliness and hygiene in urban areas.

This fund will be used to construct modern public toilets, solid waste management, and wastewater facilities. This will be particularly beneficial for improving sanitation in densely populated urban areas of the state, ensuring better health outcomes, and environmental sustainability.

MoHUA officials reiterated the government’s commitment to improving urban sanitation in West Bengal. Officials stated that under SBM 2.0 they will also work to bring about a behavioural change in the people with the help of awareness and community engagement programmes.

These initiatives outlined by the officials will be primarily implemented by the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), along with the state and central government institutes for effective and timely execution.
