MOHALI: The Municipal Corporation of Mohali has finally received the approval after a wait of four years to lay new sewage system in the city by the Punjab Government. The replacement of existing system will cost Rs 21 crore under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) Mission.
According to Kulwant Singh, Mayor of Mohali, a detailed project report and the action plan was submitted by civic body of Mohali four years ago to the Punjab Government for the approval. He said, “Finally we have been given a green signal and the funds have been sanctioned for the project. We will replace the main sewage system in Mohali which had broken down years ago. Residents have been complaining about sewage overflowing in many parts of the city which after replacement of lines will be rectified.”
He told that civic body will be replacing the 8.5 km long sewage system in a phased manner at cost of Rs 21.22 crore and the project will be executed under central government scheme. Soon tenders for the project will also be floated to invite engineering companies for execution of the project.
The total expenditure for completion of project will be shared between the Centre, state government and the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in ratio of 50 per cent, 30 per cent, and 20 per cent respectively.
The Mayor added that operation and maintenance cost of the system for five years is estimated to be Rs 67.94 lakh, and the civic body will be ensuring to increase the diameter of the sewage lines to sustain the amount of discharge.
