MADURAI: The Madurai Municipal Corporation (MMC) has formed eight teams to inspect the firms who regulate banned plastic products in the market through the business establishments. Corporation will also take strict action by imposing heavy fines to the ban violators. The Tamil Nadu government had banned the manufacturing, storing, selling and using of banned plastic products since January last year.
P Vijayalakshmi, Commissioner, Tirunelveli Corporation said, “Corporation officials are conducting surprise checks in the places where banned plastic products are stored and sold to the business establishments or the public.”
An inspection team of corporation had conducted several raids from January 1 to May 6 against the suspected business establishments, including shops, hotels, jewelry showrooms and other places on behalf of the information. During the checks they seized about 2,311 kg of banned plastic products and collected a fine of Rs 2.30 lakh from the firms that violated the rules.
Following the regulation, the Corporation has decided to form two more inspection teams per zone and hence the Corporation will have eight teams for their four zones namely, Tirunelveli, Thatchanallur, Palayamkottai and Melapalayam. These teams will conduct raids in suspected firms between 3 pm and 6 pm every day.
“If banned plastic products are seized during these raids, hefty fines will be imposed besides initiating legal proceedings against the erring firms,” Vijayalakshmi warned.
