GURUGRAM: To ensure that vendors and shopkeepers do not encroach on the footpaths and streets, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) formed four teams to monitor the city markets.

MCG officials said, there are four zones and each zone has its own team, the teams will soon meet all the shopkeepers and market association members in all the markets located within MCG’s jurisdiction. Shopkeepers has to ensure they do not display their goods and items outside their shops and street vendors will not be allowed to use such spaces as well.

S S Rohilla, Public Relation Officer (PRO) of the MCG said, “Street vendors and shopkeepers have been using streets and footpaths meant for pedestrian use for a long time. This has resulted in snarls, clogged streets and spillage of garbage in the markets. We have constituted four teams to relocate all street vendors from the markets to street vending zones.”

Violators who repeats the action will face strict actions. “Their products will be seized and a fine will be issued against the shopkeeper as well,” said Rohilla .

Teams are directed to form an action plan to make sure all the markets are covered at least once a week. A report must be submitted on this regard to the respective joint commissioners of their zone on a fortnightly basis.

Mahender Singh, City Project Officer (CPO), has been appointed as the nodal officer to monitor the initiative.

Rohilla also said that apart from submitting a progress report fortnightly to the joint commissioners, the teams will also be required to submit a weekly report on details of fines issued. This report will be submitted, through the CPO, to additional municipal commissioner Y S Gupta.

“If an offender does not pay the fine, then the junior engineer overseeing the area will approach the nearest police station and use police assistance to recover the fine,” added Rohilla.
