NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi will construct 19 model toilets in North Delhi. These toilets will have facilities such as sanitary pad vending machines, baby diaper changing stations, and seats for men, women and transgender people.
The first toilet has already been built in Jhandewalan, while the rest of them will come up in areas like Karol Bagh, Rajinder Nagar, etc. Shashanka Ala, Deputy Commissioner of MCD said that it will be ten-seat toilet and will be equipped with soap dispenser, dustbins, hand dryer, 24×7 electricity and water facility.
The bidder, according to Ala, will build and maintain the restrooms for seven years while attempting to recover costs through advertising. MCD has made no financial investments in this project. The restroom facilities at this location, according to a senior MCD official, are in poor shape. The 19 model toilets, according to her, will be ready by the end of the month.
Senior members of the civic body claimed that the corporation’s consistently falling scores in the Swachhta report were the reason for the decision to put more emphasis on sanitation. According to the results of Swachh Survekshan 2021, the former North and East MCDs placed in the bottom 10 among cities with a population over 10 lakh. The former North MCD ranked 45 out of 48 cities surveyed in the urban local body category with a population over 10 lakh, which was two places lower than its 2020 rank of 43 (of 47 local bodies); the former East MCD ranked 40; and the former South MCD ranked 31.
In contrast, the New Delhi Municipal Council had come out on top in the survey for cities with 1 lakh to 10 lakh residents.
