NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has decided to conduct a comprehensive survey of street vendors in the city based on which the street vendors will be assigned a designated space to set up their shops.

Speaking about the survey, the Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, said that it will pave the way for ensuring dignified working conditions for the vital segment of society. He said, “Allocation of proper space will ensure social inclusivity and fulfil the commitment to provide equal opportunities for all citizens.”

CM remarked that his party has taken some major decisions for the welfare of the street vendors in the city. Street vendors have to undergo a lot of difficulty as they get harassed by police, committees, and officers, which the government wants to do away with.

The number of street vendors in an area, the location of their business, and shop type will be recorded in the survey. The survey exercise will take a few months to complete.

Authorities identified about 75,000 street vendors in a similar survey conducted in 2022. However, the vendor association claims the existence of around 5 lakh street vendors in the city. They added that issuing identification certifications for all street vendors is essential for proper management.
