CHANDIGARH, Haryana: The Government of Haryana has told the Punjab and Haryana High Court in response to a petition that the elections for the posts of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor, that have been pending for more than three years, will take place on September 25. After this, the high court disposed of the petition, seeking direction from the apex court to conduct these elections.
However, the court has given the petitioner the freedom to approach the court in case the government does not conduct the elections as per the given schedule. Akshaydeep Chaudhary, a councillor from the Congress party in Panchkula Municipal Corporation, took the matter of pending elections to court. The counsel representing the petitioner said that even though the Municipal Corporation Act, 1994, and the Haryana Municipal Corporation Election Rules, 1994 state that the elections for the abovementioned positions should be held within 60 days of the notification of the newly elected municipal councillors, these positions have remained vacant for more than three years, that is, since December 2020.
