GHAZIABAD, Uttar Pradesh: A massive fire broke out at the Ghazipur landfill site in east Delhi, due to gas produced in the landfill which sent plumes of smoke billowing from the dumping yard. The area was cordoned off by the police to facilitate the movement of fire tenders.
The Ghazipur landfill fire also triggered a political debate between the Bharatiya Janata Party and AAP-led MCD with the BJP accusing the Kejriwal–led MCD of “criminal negligence.”
Authorities have stated that the fire was most likely triggered by hot and dry weather conditions.
A Delhi Fire Service (DFS) official said that the call regarding the blaze was received at 5.22 pm and two fire tenders have been rushed to the site.
“We received a call regarding the fire at 5:22 pm. Two fire tenders were pressed into service. Efforts are being made to douse the fire. Local police have been informed,” a Delhi Fire Services (DFS) official said.
Residents in the area have also complained of breathing issues due to the smoke caused by the fire. One resident also questioned why the fire started was not controlled and also complained that everyone focuses on the elections but none pays attention to daily issues of pollution and cleanliness.
