Maharashtra govt needs approval to cut 3000 trees

MUMBAI: As per the Government of Maharashtra, proposed chopping of 3000 trees by Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) in Trans Thane Creek (TTC), a popular industrial area in Mumbai, needs approval from the Maharashtra State Tree Authority.

According to law, trees that are five years old and over 200 in number cannot be removed without the permission of the authority. This was confirmed by Manisha Patankar Mhaiskar, the State’s Environment Principal Secretary, to the non-profit NatConnect Foundation. BN Kumar, Director, NatConnect Foundation, has said that they have appealed to the state environment principal secretary to immediately stop the cutting of trees by MIDC, in Navi Mumbai for construction of road and other works.
