MUMBAI, Maharashtra: The Government of Maharashtra, on Wednesday, November 30, informed the Bombay High Court that the state government will not proceed with the process of delimitation of wards for Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) till further hearing on the plea challenging the reduction of wards.

A division bench consisting of Justice S V Gangapurwala and A S Doctor was presiding over two petitions challenging an ordinance issued by the Maharashtra government reducing the number of directly elected councillors in BMC from 236 to 227. The matter of the plea has been reserved for December 20 for further hearing.

Vikram Nankani, Senior Advocate, appearing on behalf of the state government, informed the court that the delimitation process for BMC elections will not begin till the next date of hearing, which is December 20.

Earlier in August, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde led Government of Maharashtra, issued an ordinance scrapping the order of the previous government to increase the number of wards from 227 to 236. This decision of the current Maharashtra government was challenged by two former councillors Raju Pednekar and Sameer Desai.
