MADURAI: The Madurai Municipal Corporation has initiated the process of adding 28 new water supplying vehicles to its already existing fleet of 36 tankers and 25 tractors. The new water supplying vehicles are being added as a precautionary measure to fight water scarcity situation if arrived in coming days.

While the already commissioned vehicles are mainly focused to supply water in the areas where piped drinking water supply is unavailable, the new vehicles are going to be used to fulfill water demands of areas of core city where there is difficulty in water reaching through pipes.

The new water supplying vehicles are being commissioned for three months under the drought relief fund provided by the state government.

S Arasu, City Engineer, said, “Tenders for the procurement of vehicles, which include 21 tractors and 7 tankers trucks, have already been floated. Work orders will be issued in a week and the vehicles will be ready for use immediately.”

The newly inducted vehicles will be fitted with GPS tracking system to track them in real time and sensors will be installed to update about the available water in the vehicles in real time. The officials have said, the installation of pressure sensors in water tankers have increased the efficiency of water supply by 30 per cent.

Madurai city primarily relies on water from Vaigai Dam, and in case the water level in dam reach steep low the corporation would be forced to supply water one in four days, in such scenarios the vehicles will play a crucial part.
