Leonardo DiCaprio raises concern over Delhi’s air pollution

NEW DELHI: Leonardo DiCaprio, a well-known actor and an environment activist raised concerns on the deteriorating air quality of Delhi. The actor being an activist had earlier emphasised on issues like climate change, global warming, and more. DiCaprio was added to the list of actors in raising concern on the alarming air pollution levels in the Indian Capital.

The actor posted a picture on Instagram of Delhiites protesting at India Gate, demanding the government to pay attention to the rising pollution levels in the city. DiCaprio wrote that more than 1500 citizens collected at the India Gate to protest and demand immediate action from the government on the hazardous pollution levels in the city. He further wrote that according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it is estimated that around 1.5 million deaths have been caused by air pollution in India.

Leonardo said that the Indian Prime Minister’s office set up a special panel to address the issue, within a few hours of the protest. Secondly, the Supreme Court of India has asked the Central Government and respective state governments to fix the crop and waste burning issue of Delhi within a week’s time.

He also added that the Center accepted that Green Fund would be used to combat toxic air pollution and the Indian Prime Minister asked the Agriculture Ministry to distribute equipment on urgent basis so that crop burning remains no longer a necessity.
